Enabling a Participatory Culture using Creative Commons Licenses

November 29, 2010 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: Lately, a question on my mind is whether or not the concept of Networked Nonprofits is a global one as I've had the opportunity to share some of the ideas beyond the US borders in Kenya and UK.    I think Pratham Books, an NGO in India,  is a networked nonprofit.  I first discovered the organization about a year ago when I taught some workshops in India. Subsequently,  I invited Gautam John who works with Pratham Books to write a guest post about their social publishing strategy … [Read more...]

Happy TweetsGiving! Epic Thanks!

November 24, 2010 by Beth Kanter

I'm just back from a trip to Kenya and London and as they say in the UK, "cream crackered"  (really tired).  I'm really grateful to be home with family and friends - and for the many wonderful global friends I have around the world made through the connectedness of social media.    But before I rest, I wanted to let you know that it's Tweetsgiving time again, a global celebration of gratitude and giving lasting 48 hours to support the work of EpicChange. Founded in 2008, the original … [Read more...]

Networked Nonprofit at the Guardian in London

November 22, 2010 by Beth Kanter 4 Comments

I stopped in London on my way back to the US from Kenya for a couple of book events.   This morning I did an interactive session at the Guardian hosted by its new voluntary sector network - a new online space where professionals working in and with the voluntary sector can discuss and debate the issues which affect their professional lives - and get advice and insight from peers and experts.   The audience was a mix of CEOs from the UK's largest charities and a mix of longtime social … [Read more...]

November 21, 2010 by Beth Kanter

I arrived in London yesterday on my way back from Kenya to give a couple of talks about The Networked Nonprofit.  Some of the first nonprofit and social media I connected with through blogs five years ago are in the UK - so it was nice to catch up with Steve Bridger begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting,  Nick Booth, and David Wilcox.   We took a photo walk at the Tate.  I also met Mark Charmer and Anne McCrossan. I had a lovely dinner with Nick Booth and Steve … [Read more...]

The Networked Nonprofit in Kenya

November 21, 2010 by Beth Kanter

I've just spent the last couple of days in  Nairobi, Kenya because I'm a board member of an NGO based here, Ushahidi, an organization that builds tools for democratizing information and increasing transparency.  I decided to stay a few extra days and facilitate a workshop on the Networked Nonprofit for local NGOs.   This blog post includes some reflections about my first visit to Africa, the importance of face-to-face meetings and building relationships, and some thoughts about how some of the … [Read more...]
