Gmail Motion: April Fools Joke, But Great Idea

April 1, 2011 Filed Under: Digital Wellness

This is a very funny April Fools Day joke from Google called Gmail Motion. The new feature allows users to move in front of their computers to open email, send replies, etc. While obviously a joke, it isn’t a bad idea. I find that if I’m at my desk and on my computer without taking a break,  I get a good burst of energy if I get up and move around.  It is a well known fact that exercise helps you think better.

Yeah, when I saw the link on my inbox I had actually guessed it was what it was before I clicked, having already seen motion control for a Sun Microsystems-based OS, some webcam solutions for Linux, *and* some pretty impressive user interface control hacks for Microsoft’s Kinect.
Then I started watching the video and thought this was a *GREAT* idea, and glad it was in beta, and was almost ready to click the button on the page, when I saw the ludicrous actions, and knew this was their April 1 joke. *sadface*
Motion Detection and Camera tech are advanced enough at this point to seriously impact user interface. I’d rather see it at the OS or browser level, instead of at just the GMail or webapp level, but who knows.

Thank you so much for giving everyone an exceptionally memorable possiblity to read in detail from this web site. It is usually very enjoyable and also packed with a lot of fun for me and my office mates to search the blog nearly thrice in 7 days to see the newest guidance you have got. Not to mention, I’m just certainly fulfilled for the dazzling hints served by you. Some 2 areas on this page are really the finest I’ve ever had.
