Interview with Shonali Burke: Analytics Tell Stories

August 23, 2011 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

Note from Beth: Last May, USA for UNHCR launched The Blue Key campaign as a way for U.S. residents to show their support for the 43 million refugees around the world leading up to World Refugee Day on June 20th.   I was honored when Shonali Burke invited me to be a Blue Key Champion.    She set up a private Facebook Group to facilitate our support for the campaign.     A few weeks ago, she reported back to the group some of the results of our work with some insights based on Google Analytics … [Read more...]

Social Media: Ask What's the Impact, Not the Return!

August 22, 2011 by Beth Kanter 25 Comments

I've just finished co-authoring a book about measuring the Networked Nonprofit with colleague, KD Paine.   One of the concepts that we wrestled with was "Social Media ROI,"   I don't think it necessarily works for nonprofits, especially when it applied as a litmus test to see if there are financial outcomes -- cost reductions or increased revenue.   Nonprofits should focus on continuum of value that incorporates both tangible and intangible benefits to integrating social media in communications … [Read more...]

Measuring the Networked Nonprofit

August 19, 2011 by Beth Kanter 9 Comments

If you work in social media or PR for that matter, and you are concerned about measurement, then KD Paine is already high on your list of must go to sources.    I've been following her work for at least five years and had the honor of facilitating a SXSW Panel called "Social Media, Nonprofit, and ROI Poetry Slam" where she was a participant.   Not only did she wear a Tiara, but she shared her measurement insights in rhyme. I haven't yet formally announced that I've been working on a book project … [Read more...]

Book: Cause Marketing for Dummies

August 18, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Joe Waters, who writes the Selfish Giving Blog, has published a book, Cause Marketing for Dummies and was kind enough to send me a copy.  I have not finished reading the whole book cover to cover, word for word but I did have a chance to read a couple of chapters. Cause Marketing is a partnership between a nonprofit and for-profit for mutual benefit.    The book gives a nonprofit or business everything they need to know to get started, create and implement a plan.  There is also a detailed … [Read more...]

How Can Nonprofits Switch to a Data-Informed Culture?

August 17, 2011 by Beth Kanter

I've been reflecting on why some nonprofits do a better job of  measurement and learning, while others do not.  What is the difference?  It comes down to organizational culture.   The nonprofits that embrace measurement have a data-driven culture.  That is they make decisions based on meaningful data, rather than solely by gut. Not all nonprofits are born with the spreadsheet gene.    And it isn't simply a technical problem that can be solved through training or purchasing analytics software.   … [Read more...]
