Guest Post: Hashtags Are Like #Snowflakes

August 15, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: You'll find some good tips from David and Ehren on how to leverage their platform.    I'd like to emphasize one of their points -  "measure - experiment-measure."      Not every nonprofit is born with the "data driven gene."    One way your organization can begin to create a culture of measurement and learning is to always be piloting with small projects.    Setting up a test of hashtag giving is an example.  You'd test different calls to action on Twitter, using the Hashtag. … [Read more...]

Where Should You Invest Your Time: Google+, Search, or Email?

August 11, 2011 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

Yesterday on Google +,  John Haydon made a provocative  statement:   "It's a big mistake to say that nonprofits should wait on Google +" Like my colleague, Geoff Livingston, I disagree with that statement or hoping on bandwagons.   I said as much in a recent Chronicle of Philanthropy Podcast with Alison Fine. I think nonprofits should wait or rather don't jump in deeply with a heavy time investment quite yet.  Take an ROI approach to the amount of time that is being spent, especially if you … [Read more...]

Why I Don't "Like" You on Prezi In the comments on my post,  "Likes on Facebook Are Not A Victory: Results Are,"   Carie Lewis  shared her killer deck on PREZI  offers some advice for engaging your network after they click the "like" button.   It was too good not to share. Carie Lewis mentioned the Humane Society's KPIs - which is why they do and how they measure this sustained engagement. "We tie our social media efforts back to three KPIs: actions taken, donations made, andcustomer … [Read more...]

August 10, 2011 by Beth Kanter 9 Comments

Today,  NTEN's Amy Sample Ward shared this fabulous video on Facebook.   It is from the recent workshop that NTEN and NPower in Charlotte, NC to help participants understand the power of data to drive decision-making for nonprofits.    It's a topic that NTEN's executive director, Holly Ross, has covered with this must-read post: “Four Ways Nonprofits Can Increase Their Impact With Data.” NTEN is also doing this flash poll to learn how nonprofits make sense of their own data.  I'd love to see a … [Read more...]

Likes on Facebook Are Not A Victory: Results Are!

August 9, 2011 by Beth Kanter

As part of my work as Visiting Scholar at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation,  I'm facilitating several peer exchanges on the topics of measurement, social media, and networked nonprofits.   This is feeding into my  work on a book with KD Paine on that topic. Last month I had the pleasure of facilitating another peer exchange for Packard grantees who are children's advocates and was thrilled to have Momsrising co-founder Kristin Row-Finkbeiner share some of the secrets of how networked … [Read more...]
