The Fives Stages of Measurement Acceptance
Infographics, if done well, can be a useful way to boil down key principles, ideas, or themes. They're gaining popularity everywhere, including the nonprofit sector. More and more nonprofits are starting to use them and it isn't difficult to find lots of examples and curate them. KD Paine, my co-author of the Measuring the Networked Nonprofit (due out in later in 2012), pointed me to this gem of a measurement checklist in an infographic format. I like the positive frame they put on … [Read more...]
Creating Learning Experiences That Connect, Inspire, and Engage
A few days ago I opened the door on a new learning journey. I am very excited about upcoming peer learning projects that I'm working on in 2012, including several for Packard grantees in India, Pakistan, and Africa as well as the e-Mediat project in the Middle East. It is a great opportunity to ponder the question: How to design and deliver learning experiences for nonprofits that connect, inspire, and engage? What are the best practices? Content Delivery Is Not Learning On New Year's … [Read more...]
Taking 18 Minutes Day Towards A Year-Long Focus
Over the holiday break, I read 18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction, and Get the Right Things Done by Peter Bregman who blogs at at the HBR. This book is a gem. Each chapter starts with a personal story that illustrates a concept related to managing unproductive distractions. What's refreshing and different about this book is that it isn't about trying to get everything done efficiently. Instead he guides you on how to focus on what matters and ignore the rest. He offers … [Read more...]
A New Year: A New Learning Journey Begins
I spent a very quiet holiday with family at Half Moon Bay and taking a New Year's hike on Ano Nuevo to see the elephant seals. Nature hikes and down time with family are nourishing and replenishing. As I watched the last sunset of 2011 fade over the Pacific Ocean, I wanted to formally say farewell to Zoetica, the company I co-founded with Geoff Livingston and Kami Huyse that we announced in January, 2010 one day after my birthday, and one day before the Haiti Earthquake. Geoff has … [Read more...]
Donate To Global Voices and Support Citizen Journalists from Around the World
Global Voices: Who We Are from Global Voices on Vimeo. I've been a member of the Global Voices Community since 2004 where I first connected with Cambodian bloggers like John Weeks, Tharum, and others. While I'm not active in the community, I continue to support this community - as a donor and a board member of "Friends of Global Voices" for the past few years. Global Voices has been there as revolutions happened, dictatorships fell, and network effects rippled through the cities and … [Read more...]
Day 12: Let's Help Send Some Cambodian Kids To College – #12days of giving
I've been participating in the #12DaysofGiving , a 12-day bonanza of giving, sharing, and promoting social good from 12/13 to 12/24. Each day a different blogger champions a cause. Today is the last day and it is finally my turn! I'm fundraising for the Sharing Foundation, that supports children and young people in Cambodia. HELP ME SEND SOME CAMBODIAN KIDS TO COLLEGE! DONATE HERE! Why this charity? Because my children were adopted from Cambodia and it is a way to give back. Education … [Read more...]
Six Books About Skills You Need To Succeed in A Networked World
Earlier this week, I wrote a guest post over at FrogLoop blog about Five Social Media Books, although not everyone liked the post. I admit that I mostly read non-fiction, but if I only read social media or geeky books that would be too narrow. It is less about the tools and more about the new mindsets you need to be successful. There are two excellent books that talk about this in the context of running an organization and addressing social issues - and I plan to review these in more … [Read more...]
Facebook Timeline Covers To Spread Your Organization's Brand? A good idea or not?
Last week, Facebook rolled out the Facebook Timeline to all users. While the timeline has the potential to embarrass some users who might have inappropriate photos buried along their timeline, the cover image might be an opportunity for nonprofits to engage their champions to help spread the word about the organization. The Ocean Conservancy has done just that! They are offering "wall paper" and "covers" with wonderful photos of the ocean and ocean life to supporters to install on their … [Read more...]
