The Digital Immigrant

October 17, 2011 by Beth Kanter 1 Comment

Guest post by Mary Manuel “Social networks are not about technology, they are enabled by technology”.  I’m sitting with this thought as I write and publish my first ever blog.  As a digital immigrant, my goal for this conference is to practice learning the language of my new country at the GEO Networks conference over the next two days. As I become absorbed in frenetic tweeting of my “aha” moments and pay half attention to the speakers, I become afraid that I will lose the culture and … [Read more...]

Plenary Session: A Grantmakers' Gathering on Networks

October 17, 2011 by Beth Kanter

The morning plenary for A Grantmakers' Gathering on Networks was designed to deliver robust, thought-provoking content for grantmakers who want to use a networked approach for the strategy as well as time for people to make connections with others and process and apply these new ideas. After a welcome by Kathleen Enright, President and CEO of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations, Diana Scearce, Monitor Institute was our facilitator.   She immediately had us moving around and introducing … [Read more...]

On October 17 and 18th,   I will have the honor of participating in an interactive convening, hosted by GEO and the Monitor Institute focused on how funders can increase their impact by supporting networks and embracing more open and collaborative approaches to grantmaking.   Attendees will explore concrete examples and tools that grantmakers can use to tap the power of networks and increase peer-to-peer learning among grantmakers who are experimenting with networks.   The conference program and … [Read more...]

Can Social Media Save Lives? Guest Post by Porter Gale

October 13, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: I'm publishing this post from 30,000 feet in the air flying my favorite airline, Virgin America, enroute to Washington, DC for Give the Max Day.   (If you've been reading this blog for a long time, you'll know that this isn't my first inflight blog post).    As I was boarding my the plane, my colleague Jennifer Aaker, co-author of the book, The Dragon Fly Effect reached out to me about the plight of  Amit Gupta who needs a bone marrow match.    When Jennifer's book … [Read more...]

A Free Agent for Hunger: Pittsburgh Tote Bag Project

October 12, 2011 by Beth Kanter 5 Comments

Many nonprofits, particularly smaller organizations, say their biggest challenge to using social media effectively is that they don't have the time or staff.   Those that have opened themselves up to using these tools and connecting with passionate people in their networks find abundance.    Here's one story about how one free agent, a social media savvy volunteer for a local food bank, saw a problem, reached out to her network, and helped solved in collaboration with the local nonprofit. Sue … [Read more...]
