Social Media and Mobile for Real Time Professional Learning at Conferences

April 26, 2011 by Beth Kanter 6 Comments

Last week,  I faciltated a mini-workshop at the Silicon Valley/Peninsula Nonprofit Leadership Forum hosted by Compasspoint.  I've had the pleasure of working closely with Compasspoint as part of my continuing work as Visiting Scholar at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.   I enjoy it because I get double dose:   great ideas about the integration of technology with leadership, training, and capacity building AND the content. The lunchtime conversation was with Emmett D. Carson, Ph.D., CEO … [Read more...]

What's Your Calling?

April 24, 2011 by Beth Kanter

At SXSW and facilitating a panel called  A Global Discussion About Networked Nonprofits and Free Agents,  I introduced myself with this photo of me and Lena, the master trainer from Yemen for the E-Mediat Project.   The photo shows us modeling "shoulder to shoulder" learning.  Told the room that nonprofit capacity building was my calling. Later,  Michael Hoffman, who was in the audience,  introduced me to his friends at "The Calling" and they suggested  I write a guest post about anything I'm … [Read more...]

Show Me Your Nonprofit Dashboard!

April 21, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: Show Me Your Dashboard!  Imagine that I'm dancing around singing that phrase.    I'm looking for good examples (and stories) about nonprofit dashboards, especially ones that support social media decision-making.   Tell me about your dashboard in the comments - and if you're willing to take a screen capture or two, your organization's dashboard could be featured on this blog! Nonprofit Dashboards, Guest Post by Jacob Smith A dashboard can be your nonprofit's trusted adviser.  … [Read more...]

QR Codes, Electronic Devices,Nonprofits, and Concert Etiquette

April 18, 2011 by Beth Kanter

QR Codes (Quick Response) is a bar code that can be scanned by your mobile phone (with a free app) and are currently being used with print media (or t-shirt media) to point people to more information online.   The information embedded can be a URL, a link to a download, text, phone number, or SMS. According this post by Gina Trapani, many geeks think QR codes are gimmicky, clumsy, not used well or enough, or that they're "a solution looking for a problem.   That's no surprise given there  are … [Read more...]

Sneak Peak of New Facebook Nonprofit Use Research from Idealware

April 11, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: For those of you who have been following my blog for a long time,  you know of my obsession with research reports, particularly social media research snippets.   The good folks at Idealware offered me a sneak peak of their new Facebook research - how could I resist?   Charts, graphics, analytics, metrics, and data are like crack to me ... A guest post by Kyle Andrei, Idealware Who's seeing success with their Facebook page? In February, Idealware distributed a survey (thorough an … [Read more...]

Connected Citizens Report: The Power, Peril, and Potential of Networks

April 8, 2011 by Beth Kanter 6 Comments

Knight Foundation and Monitor Institute published a new report called "Connected Citizens" that looks at the impact of networks on communities, and asks, what do these emerging networks mean for community change? And, how can funders leverage them for good?   The report analyzes many examples of networks and provides tools and tips for Network-Centric Grantmaking.    Diana Scearce, who I've had the pleasure of working with on the Network of Networked Funders project, is the report author. The … [Read more...]

Twitter Community Organizing Rules for Non Profits

April 7, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: I love when I discovered folks who are community organizers and successfully transfer what they know about community organizing offline to the online world.   Robin shared some of her thoughts in the comments of a recent blog post, and I invited to share her community organizing rules for Twitter.  Enjoy. As a community organizer, Twitter makes a lot of sense.  Organizing is about building relationships and mobilizing people around a cause.  Twitter does exactly that.  I have … [Read more...]
