Beirut Diary: I’m in Beirut for the week as part of The E-Mediat project, a capacity building project that leverages a networked approach. I’m the lead for Zoetica where my role is to deliver training, advise on the curriculum and coaching methods, model transparency, and serve as meta network weaver. I have the honor of co-training with some of the best folks doing work in this part of the world.   (Here's the posts from Day 1 and Day 2) The E-Mediat project is sponsored by MEPI, US … [Read more...]

What can you learn by visualizing your Twitter network?

February 25, 2011 by Beth Kanter 8 Comments

When we apply a network mindset to the way we work - whether as an individual or as part of a network strategy,  we believe that value is created through our connections, interactions and building relationships.  That's social capital and it does have value.   The impact,  longer term, is innovation or the result of the network in action. Let's focus on the very first steps.   Once you or your organization views the world with a networked mindset, then you need to visualize the network.   There … [Read more...]

E-Mediat: Beirut Bound – Guess What's In My Suitcase?

February 25, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Today, I'm headed to Beirut, Lebanon for the E-Mediat project, a multi-stakeholder capacity building  project for NGOS and Social Media in the Middle East.   I’ll be sharing insights about the project as it unfolds here on my blog and other social media channels, including #Emediat tag on Twitter. The project is  a rich opportunity for learning because it is a capacity building project that leverages a networked approach.  I’m the lead for Zoetica where my role is to deliver training, advise on … [Read more...]

Two Ways To Use Crowdsourcing for Face-to-Face Conferences

February 24, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Crowdsourcing is the process of organizing many people to participate in a joint project, often in small ways.   The results are greater than an individual or organization could accomplish alone.  There are many examples of crowdsourcing techniques used by nonprofits and foundations and The Networked Nonprofit devoted an entire chapter to the topic. Does crowdsourcing enhance or bring value to face-to-face conferences?   Where is it most useful?  Planning for the overall conference agenda,  … [Read more...]

The Colbert Report Tags: Colbert Report Full Episodes,Political Humor & Satire Blog,Video Archive   Last week at the TechSoup Global Summit, I had an opportunity to meet Annie Leonard and do a quick interview about their lessons learned working as a networked.  As I listened to her speak about their experience,   I knew this would be a terrific case study to share in Beirut as an example of working in a networked way.    Annie was kind enough to give me her notes so I could … [Read more...]

Bringing a Network Mindset To Nonprofit Boards

February 23, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: A few weeks ago, the Leadership Learning Community invited me into their board meeting.   Not just to quietly listen, but participate in the discussion about applying a networked lens to nonprofit governance.    (If you want to better understand what the term network mindset and what it has to do with nonprofit leadership, check out their recent paper on the topic.) Guest Post: Bringing a Network Mindset to Our Nonprofit Board by Deborah Meehan Over the last month as we prepared … [Read more...]
