E-Mediat: A Simple Design Process for an Online Learning Community Site

January 19, 2011 by Beth Kanter 12 Comments

This second post shares some insights from the planning sessions for E-Mediat project, a networked approach to capacity building for NGOs in Social Media in the Middle East.  (For context, read my earlier post) One of the project tasks is to develop a multilingual online learning community for partners, contributors, sponsors, participants, teams, mentors, social media techies from the region, and trainers to interact and share best practices.   Meedan, an implementation partner, is … [Read more...]

E-Mediat: Networked Capacity Building in the Middle East

January 18, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Last week, I participated in three very intense days of project, curriculum, and online community planning for a new project, E-Mediat, a multi-stakeholder capacity building  project for NGOS and Social Media in the Middle East.   This is the first of a three-part post about the planning meetings. I'll be sharing insights about the project as it unfolds -- it is going to be a rich opportunity for learning because it is a capacity building project that leverages a networked approach.  I'm the … [Read more...]

Some Social Media Capacity Building Inspiration from MLK

January 17, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Today is the  25th anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, to celebrate his work  and legacy.   One of the most powerful and lasting ideas was his belief in strengthening communities and empowering individuals.  His vision helped him achieve a great many goals and he has inspired many generations of Americans. There are many inspirational quotes from his speeches and work beyond his most famous words, "I have a dream."    Here's a quote that I think applies to nonprofit capacity … [Read more...]

The Networked NGO: Translating the Networked Nonprofit and 1-11-11 Club

January 13, 2011 by Beth Kanter 3 Comments

Networked NGO View more presentations from Beth Kanter. This year my birthday (Jan. 11) was very special indeed and not only because the date had all ones: 1-11-11. But, I'll get to birthday fun in a minute. I spent my part of my birthday giving a presentation at the Packard Foundation Program Forum on translating the Networked Nonprofit into the Networked NGO.  The presentation was an opportunity to share some insights about working internationally and from sharing the ideas from the book  … [Read more...]

Looks Like Philanthropy Wasn't One of Apple's New Years Resolutions

January 11, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Since December, over 12,000 people  have signed an online petition to urge Steve Jobs to change Apple's unfriendly  iPhone donation policy.   Yesterday,  Vincent Stehle, in his column in the Chronicle of Philanthropy took Apple to task for its poor corporate citizen record, compared to the generosity of its competitors like Google, Microsoft,  Adobe, and others.   On the other side of the Atlantic,  Nick Hurd,  Civil Society Minister in the UK, has announced that he will write Apple to encourage … [Read more...]

Using Social Media to Share Research

January 10, 2011 by Beth Kanter 8 Comments

Note from Beth: Last Spring,  Allison Fine and I did an evaluation report for the Case Foundation on the America's Giving Challenge 2009.  One of the ideas we explored is it possible through social media to share some of the findings in a conversational way to help prod more insights from the field.   We experimented with "Conversational Case Studies" and found that conversation in the comments helped improve the richness of the final report. That model uses social media a mechanism to give … [Read more...]

Using Social Media to Leverage Family Stories for Healthcare Reform: MomsRising Shares Lessons Learned

January 6, 2011 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: We featured Momsrising in our book, The Networked Nonprofit, as an example of a nonprofit that was born as a Networked Nonprofit.   They are experts in using  social media as part of their multi-channel advocacy campaigns.   They are also experts in repurposing content for different channels.  If you're grappling with a content strategy, take a look at what they do.  You'll learn lots.  They are also experts in reflecting and learning about what works and what doesn't with social … [Read more...]

Is Quora Yet Another Social Network (YASN) or Something Different?

January 6, 2011 by Beth Kanter

(Note from Beth: Geoff Livingston contributed to this post.  Thanks Geoff! ) Over the holidays,  I finally visited Quora, a social learning site focused around asking and answering questions founded by an ex-Facebook employee.   Quora has been around for a year and provides an independent question platform from Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn that is similar to Yahoo! Answers.  It does heavily rely on Twitter and Facebook for promotion, adding it to the increasing amount of social middleware … [Read more...]
