Time Management for Nonprofit Social Media Professionals: What's Your Best Tip?

January 5, 2011 by Beth Kanter

In the nonprofit sector, time is our most valuable resource.   It can't be recycled if we squander it. Distractions are time wasters and you need to manage them not the other way around.    Some interruptions come from our physical environment.  Co-workers stop at your desk to chat or a colleague asks you to compile a report.   Distractions come from the  Internet if  you have email,  Twitter, or mobile phone beeping at you.  Or if  you've developed the bad habit of mindless checking of your … [Read more...]

Using Social Media for Professional Learning: Seek, Sense, and Share

January 3, 2011 by Beth Kanter

For 2011, my three words are:   Seek,  Sense, and Share inspired by Harold Jarche's model for networked learning. How these words will guide me in 2011: Seek: Seeking is the process of keeping up to date in your field.   Over the past decade, the Internet and social media have been one of my primary sources for professional learning.  To me,  seeking represents the topics or content that I'm curious about and that will help me be more effective at my work as a social media and nonprofit … [Read more...]

My New Year's Resolution: Balancing Solitude and Connectedness

December 31, 2010 by Beth Kanter

One of my New Year's resolutions is to reduce distractions.  It's about curating your network but allowing time for strategic serendipity.    I'll be writing about that topic in the weeks and months to come. I've discovered some wonderful discussion threads about one of my favorite topics:  Information Overload and Strategies for Coping.  As George Siemens points out the issue of information overload is not new.   His definition of the problem is that it gets in the way of sustained mindfulness … [Read more...]

Social Media Measurement Roundup

December 31, 2010 by Beth Kanter 5 Comments

The  Zoetica Salon is a free online space for informal peer learning about nonprofits and social media.    It is a place to share resources and ask and answer questions.   We also identify a monthly theme to discuss in more in depth.    We want to distinguish the salon from the informal knowledge sharing that happens daily on the web or behind pay walls by offering a regular synthesis of the stories, knowledge, tips, resources, and wisdom shared in real time in the salon. This month's theme … [Read more...]

A Reflection on Networked Professional Learning

December 30, 2010 by Beth Kanter

Many years ago before digital cameras and children, my husband and I used to spend many hours combining two past times: birding and photography.   Over the holidays, we picked out some of the  best to scan.      Looking at these photos reminds me of how much focused attention we gave to setting up the shot,  shooting during the best time for light, debating the rule of thirds, taking photos at different angles, f-stops, and timings, etc.      There was a slowness to it that we don't have with … [Read more...]

Are Qwerty Monsters the Nonprofit Donors of the Future?

December 22, 2010 by Beth Kanter

Yesterday I had the pleasure of participating in the final #zoogood Twitter chat of 2010.   The topic we explored was mobile fundraising, ranging from best practices, integration and why applications on phones haven't taken off.   I'm in learning mode, so this post is a quick summary of insights, questions, and resources.   I'm also in a steep learning curve with my two new mobile phones - the Windows 7 phone from Microsoft and Nexus S Android from Google. Planning for Integration … [Read more...]

Why Apple (and their Users) Need A Charity Vetting System for iPhone Apps

December 21, 2010 by Beth Kanter 7 Comments

Update: Apple made an official statement about why the pulled the app and appears to put the donation policy out of the picture.   So far, no official word from Apple on the iPhone app donation issue. Today, the Guardian Technology blog speculated that the reason why the Wikileaks iPhone app was pulled from the iTunes store was because the $1.95 fee for the app was a donation to the organization. Let's unpack this .... This is a nuanced issue.  No doubt about it.  The online petition with over … [Read more...]
