Sparked, Micro-Volunteering Network, Has Volunteers Standing By For Your Nonprofit's Next Small Project

November 4, 2010 by Beth Kanter

Note From Beth: Colleague Ben Rigby, co-founder and CTO of Sparked, a micro-volunteering networked has a problem.  The site matches skills-based volunteers with nonprofits to do just in time projects like logo or business card design, marketing help, and other small volunteering tasks.   All the job requests from nonprofits are getting down and micro volunteers are standing by to help your organization. Every time I do a workshop,  the common complaint from nonprofits is "I don't have time to do … [Read more...]

Networked Nonprofit Update: November

November 2, 2010 by Beth Kanter

I'd like to use this post to share some of the responses to the Networked Nonprofit at different book events and online during the past month and let you know about upcoming events in November. The photo above shows WiserEarth's team from around the world in the Bay Area during break from a staff retreat reading the Networked Nonprofit. Networked Nonprofit in Vegas In October, I presented on two panels at BlogWorld and briefly walked the exhibit floor to notice the book at the Wiley Booth … [Read more...]

November 1st – No Twitter or Facebook To Support Autism

November 1, 2010 by Beth Kanter 2 Comments

This is an interesting social media networked fundraiser that asks donors to stop using Twitter or Facebook for a day (November 1st) to call awareness and financial support for autism. You are asked to donate a modest amount to autism organizations ($5 or more) and you get to install an app and widget that lets your friends know that you're not using Twitter or Facebook to support autism.  In an age where social media fundraisers create cause fatigue, this is a refreshing tactic that also … [Read more...]

The Strategy Landscape Tool Helps Solve Wicked Problems

October 29, 2010 by Beth Kanter 6 Comments

Monitor Institute and the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) have launched a joint venture to bring a new data visualization tool, "The Strategy Landscape Tool"  to the field of philanthropy.   Created with support from the Rockfeller Foundation, the tool allows users to easily see and understand grantmaking strategies and patterns within and across institutions so they can make better decisions in pursuit of their goals. This tool is important because it facilitates funders working in a … [Read more...]

Guest Post Vincent Stehle: Disinfecting Dirty Elections

October 28, 2010 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

Note from Beth: Last June at the New York City book party for the Networked Nonprofit,  Stephanie Strom, New York Times, moderated a discussion on the themes in the book.    Vince Stehle asked a great question about how nonprofits might use some of the ideas in the book to engage their networks around Net Neutrality and other public issues.    Vince wrote a  guest post about Net Neutrality and Networked Nonprofits last month. This month he explores why and how networked nonprofits should rally … [Read more...]

What Was Your Biggest Social Media Mistake? What Did You Learn?

October 27, 2010 by Beth Kanter

"I made a mistake."   Those are hard words for some people to utter when there has been a screw up and they're responsible for it.   It is especially hard given the blame game culture that exists in most workplaces and work relationships.  That's where people are quick to point a finger at you and make you feel shame.  After all, nothing focuses the mind as like a hanging as Samuel Johnson once said. I feel very differently.   If I made a mistake, I admit it and try to learn from it. Carol … [Read more...]

Reflections from Independent Sector and Blackbaud Conferences

October 26, 2010 by Beth Kanter

Last week,  I had the pleasure of facilitating a Networked Nonprofit and Social Media workshop at the Independent Sector Annual Conference "Forging A Stronger Future Together" in Atlanta.   As part of my role as Visiting Scholar at the Packard Foundation, I had an opportunity to coach Independent Sector on their conference social media integration. Most participants included CEOs of nonprofit institutions and foundations and  have been working in the sector for decades.    The group also … [Read more...]

Corporate Altruism: The Blurring of the Lines Between CSR and Cause Marketing

October 25, 2010 by Beth Kanter

Corporate Altruism: The Blurring of the Lines Between CSR and Cause Marketing by Kami Watson Huyse and Beth Kanter Aligning with a cause is a great way for a for-profit company to both raise its profile while doing something good for society at large.  For nonprofits and causes, having the right corporate partner can leverage the impact of the social change work. Associating a product with a social or environmental cause people care about is a popular marketing tactic with consumers.  More than … [Read more...]
