Happy, Healthy 2016: What's Your Theme for the Year?

January 4, 2016 by Beth Kanter 9 Comments

Happy New Year!   I had a wonderful break – filled with fun, family, walking, hiking, reading, quiet, and reflection.   How about you? Last year, I decided that I didn’t need to wait until New Year’s to establish happy, healthy habits in my life.  For example, just a few weeks ago I decided to kick a bad habit to curb: sleeping with my mobile phone which was disrupting my sleep.   I did it!  I'm now am feeling refreshed and recharged for a new year. I also have New Year’s rituals that help me … [Read more...]

Does Your Nonprofit Organization's Culture Eat French Fries for Breakfast?

December 31, 2015 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

I've been working on my next book,  The Happy Healthy Nonprofit, with Aliza Sherman.   As an individual, to become happier, healthier, it partially rests with your ability to create and stick to new personal habits around self-care.   We've done a deep scan of the literature on personal habit change, like Gretchen Rubin's Better Than Before and BJ Fogg's Tiny Habits and have tested their approaches on ourselves. But as we all know, changing personal habits isn't easy for a lot of people.   And, … [Read more...]

Happy, Healthy Nonprofit: Stressed? Color Yourself Calm

December 30, 2015 by Beth Kanter 4 Comments

As part of the research for my next book, The Happy Healthy Nonprofit, with Aliza Sherman,  I'm not just reading, but actually testing out some of the techniques suggested for mindfulness. One of the most popular: coloring books.  Coloring isn't just for kids anymore.   Adult coloring books, filled with mesmerizing designs and even swear words are a hit, not just because it is fun to color.     Adult coloring books can help you de-stress. According to clinical psychologist Scott M. Bea, Psy.D., … [Read more...]

Book Review: Mindful Social Marketing by @jfouts

December 23, 2015 by Beth Kanter 3 Comments

The holiday break is a great time to read books, both for work and just plan fun.     Earlier this week, I read the recently published "Mindful Social Marketing" by colleague Janet Fouts.  If you are doing social media for a nonprofit, this book is a must read.   It is filled with great wisdom. Janet has worked with for-profits and non-profits as a marketing strategist for many years and her expertise is impressive.  I know first hand because she doesn't live too far from me and we have done … [Read more...]

Happy, Healthy Nonprofit: To Get a Good Night’s Sleep – Don’t Sleep with Your iPhone

December 21, 2015 by Beth Kanter

In the Happy Healthy Nonprofit,  one important area that we focus on are the pillars of self-care which begins with getting good quality sleep. This healthy habit sets the stage for you to incorporate other self-care routines that we describe in our book.   One surefire way to ruin your sleep is to use your mobile phone as an alarm clock.   Why?   According to scientific research,  reading a tablet or mobile phone with its backlit display in bed can make it harder to fall asleep and your sleep … [Read more...]

Interview with Greg McKeown about #EssentialLive

December 16, 2015 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

For the past five years, I have been lucky enough to attend the Social Innovation Summit in Silicon Valley, an interdisciplinary conference that brings together leaders at the intersection of technology, investment, philanthropy, international development, and business to share innovative ideas about social change.   It is always an inspiring learning experience.     This year, one of my favorite authors, Greg McKeown, who wrote  Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, gave a talk about … [Read more...]
