The Impact of Connectivity in the Future: Everything Is Connected, Cows will Tweet
I just spent two amazing days at the Social Innovation Summit 2013, a cross disciplinary crowd of people who work on social good in the areas of technology, investment, philanthropy, international development, and business. The sessions shared solutions about partnerships and programs that are disrupting the social good sector. I have been going for the past few years and every time I leave with lots of inspiration and learning. One of the plenary sessions, the "Connected World," … [Read more...]
Is "Ambient Data" from Social Media Channels Useful for Funders?
Last week the Packard Foundation hosted a convening on “Data Informed Philanthropy," an effort to explore and build digital systems that enable philanthropies to be truly data-informed. This term means having effective systems for collecting, analyzing, and making sense of data to inform and enable greater impact with funding. Here's a small list of articles and blog posts that help frame this topic, including how the term "Data-Informed" was using in my recent book, "Measuring the … [Read more...]
The Top 5 Lean Startup Resources for Social Good Organizations
Note from Beth: Two years ago while working on a capacity building project for NGOs funded by the Dept of State in the Middle East, I found myself in Jordan and visiting colleague Rami Al Karmi's start up lab. In his office, he had a stack of Lean Start Up books, authored by Eric Ries. He told me he makes every start up in his lab read it. Conan O’Brien: Stop Talking About Red Hats & Do A Monologue About Charitable Giving
I think Conan should join the #GivingTuesday movement and get more followers. Sign my petition to ask Conan to do a monologue about #GivingTuesday. On Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Conan poked fun at me because I have more LinkedIn followers than him. He joked that my red hat is the key to my success – it was a funny monologue, but I am offering Conan a better way to increase his LinkedIn followers than photoshopping a red hat on his profile. I gained influence on LinkedIn by helping … [Read more...]
Sending Prayers and Concrete Help to the Philippines: Bayanihan’ Spirit
Yesterday, Veteran's Day, was a sad day for me. I remembered my Dad, who passed away this year, who was a WW2 Vet and stationed in the Philippines. I remember him telling me stories about his experience there , one poignant story about going into a rural village and finding it destroyed. He and his fellow soldiers found a church bell in the jungle and returned it to the villagers who were overjoyed to have it although the church itself was destroyed. Almost twenty years ago, he took trip … [Read more...]
