It's Giving Days Season! No It's A Giving Days Movement!

September 19, 2013 by Beth Kanter

#GivingTuesday is a day of giving where of thousands of organizations and individuals (including me) come together to give and call attention to giving, volunteering, and infecting others.   In its first year, #GivingTuesday,  a national effort initiated by the 92ndY and the U.N. Foundation produced these results as documented by Edelman.   In the lead-up to the December 3rd event, the question of how to extend a day of giving into a giving season?   Alison Fine, my Networked Nonprofit … [Read more...]

Hosting a Day of Giving? The Knight Foundation Playbook Answers Your Questions

September 17, 2013 by Beth Kanter

As a Master Trainer, one of my favorite models of training adults is the Peer Learning Exchange where a group of participants who are working on a similar project or domain of practices interact regularly to learn how to do it better.   Peer learning is based in  real work: sharing what one is doing with others, asking for support, questions and answers and feedback.    I'm delighted to be working with the Knight Foundation and its Community Foundation partners to design and facilitate a Peer … [Read more...]

Nonprofits and Content Strategy: The Wisdom of the Network

September 13, 2013 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: I've learned a lot about how to cultivate your professional network so it returns value by reading Porter Gale's Your Network is Your Networth over the summer.   And, social networks like LinkedIn or Facebook can provide the petri dish for growing a vibrant personal network.    Although I sometimes hear from colleagues that "Facebook is personal and fun stuff" or just a lot of skepticism about how a particular social networking platform can provide professional value, it isn't … [Read more...]

Learning Analytics: Big Data Applied to Training, Teaching, and Learning

September 12, 2013 by Beth Kanter

Learning Analytics comes from a report about the impact of emerging technologies for practitioners in a field. That sounds like the title of a report that NTEN might produce that surveys the technology landscape and nonprofit usage and provides an overview of what technologies nonprofits should be looking at in the next 1-5 years.   And, NTEN is the first stop for nonprofits to go for this type of field level of research and coverage.    For those of us who also focused on training, instruction, … [Read more...]

Can Memes for Good Work for your Nonprofit's Content Strategy? Not on Facebook!

September 6, 2013 by Beth Kanter

This "Keep Calm and Shine On" t-shirt is a riff on the popular "Keep Calm and Carry On" meme used by Autism Speaks to help promote the annual World Autism Awareness Day. The California Coverage and Health Initiative used this variation to promote enrolling in health care coverage as of October 1st. And the American Society of Civil Engineers used it to promote the profession. Many charities are often stretch to find the time and resources to feed the content beast and riffing on popular memes … [Read more...]

Selfies for Good? Or just tapping into a narcissistic trend?

September 4, 2013 by Beth Kanter

No doubt you've taken a "selfie,"  a self-portrait taken with your mobile phone camera and shared on Facebook or other social media channels.   Although selfies have been around for years, they have gained popularity recently. In December 2012, Time magazine noted that selfie was among its the "top 10 buzzwords" of 2012 and in August 2013, the term selfie also made its debut in Oxford Dictionaries Online's quarterly update where it is defined as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, … [Read more...]
