Getting Started Again (After A Break)

January 7, 2013 by Beth Kanter

That's Hank, a dog that belongs to Ryann Miller from Care2 Network.  He's one of many four-legged and fine feathered fans of  "Measuring the Networked Nonprofit."   I had the honor of doing a Care2 webinar in December which was one of over 40 book talks, presentations, webinars, and workshops to launch the book.   The book continues to be in the  top nonprofit books at Amazon.     But by holiday season,  I needed a break and took one.   It was a time to focus on family and health (I had my … [Read more...]

Thanksgiving: What are you grateful for?

November 22, 2012 by Beth Kanter 2 Comments

I'm at the New Jersey Shore for the Thanksgiving holiday.     My hometown got hit pretty hard, but we're counting our blessings that my family's house is still standing and able to enjoy this Thanksgiving with family. If you haven't donated to Hurricane Sandy Relief, please consider making a contribution.  Here's my crowdrise campaign. Be sure to check out "Giving Tuesday" a national day of giving the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.   Your organization participate or you can fundraise for a cause. … [Read more...]

Taking 18 Minutes Day Towards A Year-Long Focus

January 3, 2012 by Beth Kanter

Over the holiday break,  I read  18 Minutes:  Find Your Focus, Master Distraction, and Get the Right Things Done by Peter Bregman who blogs at at the HBR.  This book is a gem.  Each chapter starts with a personal story that illustrates a concept related to managing unproductive distractions.   What's refreshing and different about this book is that it isn't about trying to get everything done efficiently.  Instead he guides you on how to focus on what matters and ignore the rest.     He offers … [Read more...]

A New Year: A New Learning Journey Begins

January 2, 2012 by Beth Kanter 26 Comments

I spent a very quiet holiday with family at Half Moon Bay and taking a New Year's hike on Ano Nuevo to see the elephant seals.     Nature hikes and down time with family are nourishing and replenishing. As I watched the last sunset of 2011 fade over the Pacific Ocean,   I wanted to formally say farewell to Zoetica, the company I co-founded with Geoff Livingston and Kami Huyse that we announced in January, 2010 one day after my birthday, and one day before the Haiti Earthquake.     Geoff has … [Read more...]

Time Management for Nonprofit Social Media Professionals: What's Your Best Tip?

January 5, 2011 by Beth Kanter

In the nonprofit sector, time is our most valuable resource.   It can't be recycled if we squander it. Distractions are time wasters and you need to manage them not the other way around.    Some interruptions come from our physical environment.  Co-workers stop at your desk to chat or a colleague asks you to compile a report.   Distractions come from the  Internet if  you have email,  Twitter, or mobile phone beeping at you.  Or if  you've developed the bad habit of mindless checking of your … [Read more...]
