4 Design Thinking Facilitation Resources for Nonprofits

June 9, 2017 Filed Under: Facilitation

Almost four years ago, I wrote my experience as a participant n a design-thinking lab to give input on a digital strategy for a philanthropy. The design lab was facilitated by Pete Maher, founder of Luma Institute.  I learned so much about the taxonomy of innovation and really practical techniques, that I took the facilitation training.    I started incorporating facilitating design labs as well as the techniques into my training practice ever since.   I even facilitated design labs to help with … [Read more...] about 4 Design Thinking Facilitation Resources for Nonprofits

Different Ways Nonprofits Are Using Design Thinking to Solve Problems and Achieve Impact

Note from Beth:  Several years ago, I was got trained in design thinking facilitation methods using Luma and have incorporated these techniques into my consulting and training practice.  I have also learned a lot from other nonprofit colleagues who have use these techniques, including Brian Reich (see this blog post about his design thinking work to solve the refugee crisis) who has just published a book on innovation called "The Imagination Gap" and my colleagues, Ted Frickes and Micheal … [Read more...] about Different Ways Nonprofits Are Using Design Thinking to Solve Problems and Achieve Impact

I'm just back from SXSW where I did a session on Tech Wellness with Aliza Sherman.  We are working on a book together called  The Happy,Healthy Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact without Burnout.   A blog post on that is coming! I did make time to attend different sessions and walk through the exhibit hall, but one of the most exciting things I saw was the "Gamestorm: Take on the Refugee Crisis" organized by colleague Brian Reich for  USA for UNHCR, the agency that helps and protects refugees and … [Read more...] about Using Design Thinking To Help Solve the Refugee Crisis at #SXSW

Using Design Thinking for A Foundation's Investment Strategy

September 29, 2015 Filed Under: Facilitation, Innovation, Meeting Design

What if a funder got real-time input from its grantees and other partners to develop its investment strategy?  What if they used a design thinking process to not only get feedback from grantees but as a way to develop a more agile way of working?   I was thrilled to work with the Brainerd Foundation staff to help design and facilitate a design lab using techniques based on Luma Institute methods earlier this month.   Here's what I learned about the facilitating design thinking processes: What … [Read more...] about Using Design Thinking for A Foundation's Investment Strategy

Using Design Thinking to ReThink Our Nonprofit or Community Foundation Work

October 27, 2014 Filed Under: Innovation, Instructional Design

Last week I was lucky enough to facilitate a mini-innovation lab for 60 community foundation program officers at the first meeting of ProNet during the Council on Foundations conference in Cleveland, Ohio that celebrated 100 years of community philanthropy. To facilitate the lab, I used human centered design techniques (for a good overview see Jen Bokoff's terrific overview post here) and more specifically the Luma Institute methods (for more, see my post here.) The intent was to provide a deep … [Read more...] about Using Design Thinking to ReThink Our Nonprofit or Community Foundation Work
