Apple May Not Listen, But Google and Microsoft Are All Ears …

December 20, 2010 by Beth Kanter 16 Comments

You might have read this article in the New York Times this month about how Apple makes it really difficult for nonprofits to collect donations from within iPhone apps and the ensuring kerfulffle from many in the nonprofit and CSR sector, including the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Nonprofit Quarterly, Cause Marketing Forum, and Foundation Center.     But the outcry was not limited to the social sector industry in US, we also heard complaints from Australia, UK, and  Canada.  It has also been … [Read more...]

Don't Merge Your Nonprofit Facebook Page With Places Page

December 17, 2010 by Beth Kanter 6 Comments

Update: Facebook added the ability to "unmerge" your page with places. Note from Beth: It has been less than a month since we launched the Zoetica Salon on my Facebook Page, a free peer learning space where we are discussing a monthly theme (this month is measurement) related to nonprofits and social media, sharing resources, as well as answering questions and sparking conversation.    The Salon has been a terrific listening post and generated some good ideas for how-to posts like this one from … [Read more...]

According to PC World, Yahoo will shut down several of its Web properties, including Delicious,  according to a leaked Yahoo presentation slide that was posted on Twitter. I was hoping this was just a rumor. Oh, say it ain't so .... but this TechCrunch confirms the demise of one of my favorite tools pointing to this post by Liz Gannes. My early days in social media were spent immersed in tagging and social bookmarking.   Marnie Webb introduced me to the NpTech Tag and a whole nonprofit tech … [Read more...]

Want Apple To Get iPhone Donations Right? Sign the Online Petition!

December 14, 2010 by Beth Kanter

Apple makes it really difficult for nonprofits to collect donations from within iPhone apps and we all want them to get it right.    As the Chronicle of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Quarterly reported last week, Apple’s policy has raised the ire of some nonprofits leaders.   We've started an online petition at Care2 and it has almost  6,000 signatures collected so far sending Mr. Jobs at Apple a message. Alyson Kapin over at Froggy Loop Blog wrote a post,  "Tell Steve Jobs: Don't Be A Bad Apple" … [Read more...]

My Triple Ripple of Kindness: Helping Women in San Jose and Kenya

December 14, 2010 by Beth Kanter

I've been complaining about Apple's anti-charity approach, but for this post I want to share an example about how one company is encouraging acts of kindness and charity during the holiday season.   It comes from Apple's  Silicon Valley neighbor, Yahoo.  The program is called How Good Grows, a holiday event that is part of Yahoo's CSR program. The idea is simple.   They want to encourage and highlight small acts of kindness that can trigger big ripples and at the same time drive awareness and … [Read more...]

How Minnesota’s ‘Networked Nonprofits’ Raised over $10M in 1 Day!

December 10, 2010 by Beth Kanter

Note From Beth: Last year I covered Give to the Max Day and the impressive results.    This year before the event Jeff Achen write a post sharing their strategy for 2010.     This guest post discusses the results. Minnesota’s ‘Networked Nonprofits’ raised over $10M in one day by Jeff Achen of GiveMN.org “Do what you do best and network the rest.” That’s simple, but wise advice from the definitive nonprofit social media strategy manual, “The Networked Nonprofit.” Here at GiveMN, we’ve harnessed … [Read more...]

Feeding America's Social Media Measurement Strategy

December 9, 2010 by Beth Kanter 7 Comments

Social Media Measurement is this month's theme on my blog Facebook page.   Last week, Dan Michel offered an intriguing answer to this question: "What form of social media measurement does your organization engage in; Community participation, advocacy (earned mentions, discussions), or donations ($ or time)? " I thought it would useful to have a more in-depth conversation with Dan so we could delve into KPIs for social media.   The conversation was fast and intense on Facebook, so that's why I'm … [Read more...]
