Are the Claims About the Death of Email Greatly Exaggerated?
I asked the above question on Twitter after reading what Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg said at the Nielsen’s Consumer 360 conference. If you read only that, then you might think email is on life support. (A change from a few years ago when people were saying "Email is for old people." ) As much as we'd wish that email was dead, read Austin Carr’s recent Open Thread article on FastCompany. Perhaps this is a more likely scenario- a phased transition or continual upgrade. While … [Read more...]
Networked Nonprofits Deconstruct Social Media Fears
This morning Allison Fine and I got up extra early for a Bagels and Books Event for The Networked Nonprofitat the National Conference on Volunteering and Service here in NYC. At book events, one of the most common themes we hear from nonprofits is about the fear that organizational leaders have about social media. Opening up organizations is uncomfortable because it strikes at the heart of what so many organizational leaders were taught as their jobs -- to protect the organization by … [Read more...]
Networked Nonprofit Virtual Book Club Week 2: Busting Social Media Myths
I'm in NYC for the last leg of book launch tour for the Networked Nonprofit. I'm pleased about the positive reception of the big picture ideas and concepts in the book, I'm wildly enthusiastic about hearing from people as they put the ideas into practice! For example, one of the concepts in the book is understanding social networks, social networking mapping, and network weaving. Deborah Finn has a terrific blog post sharing her experience mapping a network. Social Edge is hosting a virtual … [Read more...]
Nonprofit 2.0 Reflections: Sharing Practices Around Listening and Free Agents
I attend a lot of conferences, but mostly as a keynote speaker, workshop leader, or panelist. I don't often get a chance to listen and learn. That was the gift of attending Nonprofit 2.0 Conference, especially the "unconference sessions" in Washington, DC on Friday. A big thank you conference organizers! We kicked off the conference with an interview style keynote about the Networked Nonprofit, moderated by fabulous Shireen Mitchell (aka digitalsista). The best part is when the audience … [Read more...]
Washington, DC: Book Launch Events
We were in Washington, DC on Thursday and Friday for our book tour for The Networked Nonprofit to celebrate with live and virtual events hosted by the Case Foundation and Chronicle of Philanthropy. We also keynoted the Nonprofit 2.0 Conference. On Thursday afternoon, Peter Panepento, hosted a BlogTalk Radio show with us. This was the first time I had participated in talk show style streaming event. It was more than a book promotion event - it was an opportunity to have an in-depth … [Read more...]
Is The Networked Nonprofit Is In Your Hands Yet?
I've been getting word on Twitter, Facebook, and elsewhere that people are receiving their copies of the book from Amazon. And their sharing photos Flickr and Facebook. Please share add yours to the collection! Starting this week, our friends at SocialEdge have created a virtual book club where we will share brief excerpts from the book each week and discuss them. We're excited to continue the conversation about the ideas in the book and see how you apply them. If you want to start … [Read more...]
Let's Talk About Networked Nonprofits: TechSoupGlobal Book Party
Today Allison Fine and I celebrated the launch of the Networked Nonprofit at TechSoup Global in the space where Netsquared Meetups take place. I got to snap this photo of two women, Marnie Webb and Charlene Li, who have greatly influenced my work over the past 5-10 years. It was fantastic to connect with colleagues in SF, almost like a family reunion. Finally, people really wanted to dig in and discuss the big ideas in the book! Having the party at TechSoupGlobal meant a lot to me. I've … [Read more...]
Thank You For Making The Networked Nonprofit Launch A Hit!
It was a special launch day for our book, The Networked Nonprofit, thanks to you! On June 21st, the book was in the top 200 bestsellers on Amazon for the past five hours. During the peak, it was ranked as the #1 nonprofit bestseller, #3 for general industries, #19 in the overall business segment, and #108 overall in America! We really appreciate everyone's contributions to this success. What a send off! We had a lot of fun with the Ustream live stream and Twitter chat where we discussed the … [Read more...]
