Using Design Thinking To Help Solve the Refugee Crisis at #SXSW
I'm just back from SXSW where I did a session on Tech Wellness with Aliza Sherman. We are working on a book together called The Happy,Healthy Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact without Burnout. A blog post on that is coming! I did make time to attend different sessions and walk through the exhibit hall, but one of the most exciting things I saw was the "Gamestorm: Take on the Refugee Crisis" organized by colleague Brian Reich for USA for UNHCR, the agency that helps and protects refugees and … [Read more...]
International Women's Day: Using Technology to Empower Women and Girls
March 8th is International Women's Day. This day was intended to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. But progress in gender parity has been slowed in many places across the world, especially in developing countries. To mark the date, the One Campaign has shared a research report called "Poverty is Sexist," that documents how extreme poverty hurts girls and women harder and in different ways than it does boys and men, and to demand targeted action to … [Read more...]
Reboot Yourself: Take A Digital Detox Day
In the "Happy,Healthy Nonprofit" book I'm writing with Aliza Sherman, a big theme in the book is "Technology Wellness," which is how to self-manage your technology usage at work and in life. We are doing a workshop at SXSW on March 13th at 3:30 on this theme called "Go Reboot Yourself: Get A Grip on Your Tech and Life" As the Internet has become integrated into how professionals communicate, access information, and connect to one another at work as well as personal lives, there are both the … [Read more...]
How To Be A Wizard at Tech Training: NTC 2016 Session
In a couple of weeks, one of the sessions I'm facilitating at the Nonprofit Technology Conference in San Jose is called "How To Be A Wizard at Tech Training." As you can tell from the slide, we have a Harry Potter theme for the session. My colleague Cindy Leonard has used her photoshop magic to help each of the speakers transform into a character. Here's the description: Hands down, this is the most interactive session you will attend at 16NTC! Our session will change the way you design and … [Read more...]

Why Creating Space for Creative Time in the Nonprofit Workplace Improves Productivity
I've been busy interviewing people who work for nonprofits for my next book, The Happy Healthy Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact without Burnout, with Aliza Sherman. The book looks at how individuals can avoid burnout through self-care and how nonprofits can support it - through activities that promote well-being, cultural cues, or an overall strategy. How Nonprofit Leaders Create An Authentic Personal Brand on Instagram
Instagram, the popular Millennial photo sharing site, is gaining traction with world leaders, government leaders and nonprofit executive directors. According to the "World Leaders on Instagram Study" released yesterday by Burson-Marsteller as part of its latest research into how world leaders, governments and international organizations communicate via social media, the heads of state and government and foreign ministers of 136 countries currently have an official presence on Instagram, … [Read more...]
Crisis Text Line Opens Nation's Largest Set of Crisis Data for Limited Research
I've been a huge fan of Crisis Text Line since it launched back in August, 2013. I remember when I first saw it when its was in its infancy as a project at DoSomething. Nancy Lublin, who was CEO at the time, hosted a book party for "Measuring the Networked Nonprofit" and during a tour of the office, she introduced me to Bob Filbin, DoSomething's Data Scientist at the time. Nancy said, "Bob, show her the crisis text line data set." He showed me the project and explained the vision for … [Read more...]
