Five Ways to Help Your Nonprofit Learn from Feedback (and Earn More Funding Too!)

July 28, 2015 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: At the end of the day, organizations that are committed to learning will be more effective at meeting the needs of the people they serve.  Learning is the ultimate result of being "data informed" that is using feedback data to improve results.   GlobalGiving has just launched GG Rewards, a new program rewarding nonprofits that are committed to learning and improving. They have also provided resources for nonprofits to learn how to use tools to get feedback in the Feedback … [Read more...]

Reflections from Networked Nonprofit Workshop for Latin American NGOs

July 27, 2015 by Beth Kanter

[slideshare id=50784135&doc=slideshare-1-150722014147-lva1-app6892] I just returned from doing two days of facilitating a Networked Nonprofit training in Mexico City with Oxfam LAC  and participants from offices throughout Latin America, South America, and Caribbean.   The first day focused on networks and strategic use of social media along with some practical skills in content creation and measurement.  The second day was a networked leadership workshop that focused on how participants … [Read more...]

How Can Nonprofits Become Agile Learners?

July 21, 2015 by Beth Kanter 1 Comment

I read this wonderful article "Agility Is Today's Most Critical Leadership Competency" by Julie Winkle Giuliani, author of "Watch Them Grow or Watch Them Go."   Agility is defined in the dictionary as light and graceful or as a project management approach, but she defines agility as the ability for continuous learning and as a leadership competency in today's complicated world. The leadership qualities she identifies are what many of us have been described as networked leadership: Expansive, … [Read more...]

Healthy Nonprofit Work Culture: Shouldn't That 2 Hour Conference Call Have Been An Email?

July 20, 2015 by Beth Kanter

That is a slogan on a t-shirt, and while meant as a joke, it is all too familiar for many nonprofits.   Meetings that waste your time! When we talk about healthy nonprofit work culture, the fit nonprofit, it goes beyond having organizations create wellness policies and practices that encourage staff to eat right, exercise, take vacation time, and get enough sleep.    And, healthy meetings are not just about avoiding salty and sugary snacks.    It's about creating collective organizational energy … [Read more...]

Five Tips for Nonprofits Data Visualization

July 17, 2015 by Beth Kanter 2 Comments

Note from Beth: I met Matthew Scharpnick,  Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Elefint Designs, a strategic design studio that works with good causes, at the Data for Good Conference in Chicago.  One area that he works on is data visualization for nonprofits.   See for example, his case study about how to create an informative data visualization that provides context around a complex and controversial topic.    Since he does data visualization 24/7, I asked him what his best advice was for … [Read more...]

The Secret Every Successful Nonprofit Leader Knows About Being Productive

July 14, 2015 by Beth Kanter

I'm facilitating a peer learning project on practical networked leadership skills for emerging nonprofit leaders.    As we all know, living in a networked world creates opportunities for abundance.   But having many choices and opportunities requires developing a special set of skills  in order to be successful.  These skills are: self-management and attention training.  That's the focus of one of the sessions - so I have been reflecting a lot on this topic to come up with some useful exercises, … [Read more...]

The Benefits of Using Data to Bring Mindfulness to Your Work

July 10, 2015 by Beth Kanter 6 Comments

Never in a million years did I ever think I would use data and mindfulness in the same sentence.      For the past two months, I've been wearing a rock in a bra, a device called Spire.  You think of it as a fitbit for stress developed by the Calming Technology Lab at Stanford University.   You wear it in your bra or clip it to your waist, and it measures your breath.    It streams data to an app on your phone like your step count, but more importantly  gives you a report on whether you are calm, … [Read more...]

@knightfdn Offers Free Webinar Series on Taking Giving Days to the Next Level

July 9, 2015 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: I've been facilitating a community of practice of community foundations, Knight Foundation grantees, over the past two years, that have been using the Knight Foundation Giving Day Playbook to take their practice to the next level.  Starting in August, Knight will host a Webinar series that will address a range of topics, from how to land corporate sponsorships to using a Giving Day to build your community foundation’s brand.  And, because more and more communities are actively … [Read more...]
