April 26, 2015 by Beth Kanter

The devastating earthquake in Nepal has killed more than 2,400 people and injured about 5,900, residents so far (as reported in the NY Times on Sunday).  Please donate to help Nepal's Earthquake Victims now. On Saturday morning, I got a news alert on my mobile phone that there had been a devastating 7.9 earthquake in Nepal.   I immediately looked on Facebook to check on my colleague, Robert Rosenthal from VolunteerMatch to see if he was okay.  Robert has been working the last year or so from … [Read more...]

Flickr Photo by Wesley Fryer Note from Beth: This year I've been focusing more and more on leadership professional development in a networked world and finding myself working more and more with younger leaders in the nonprofit sector.     Recently,  I was chatting with Joan Garry, a consultant who works with current nonprofit leaders about the ways that nonprofits need to change in order to nurture the next generation of young leaders for the nonprofit sector.  She had such a great insights … [Read more...]

Nonprofits: Keep Calm and Mobile Friendly

April 22, 2015 by Beth Kanter

Is your web site mobile friendly?  Starting April 21, dubbed "Mobilegeddon", Google changed the search results and will show mobile friendly sites in search results (while using your mobile phone).    You can test your web site here and find out if you passed the test and if you flunked it, there is some advice on what and how to fix it.  My colleague Amy Gahran, a mobile expert, has an analysis here. My blog passed the test!   For years, I have been monitoring my mobile traffic numbers, asking … [Read more...]

Meet Gen Z Philanthropist Sejal Makheja, Founder Elevator Project

April 16, 2015 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

Perhaps you’ve been reading about Gen Z and that they’re tech savvy, passionate about doing good, and might just shake up philanthropy.    I recently read an article in the New York Times about conference for Gen Z who were learning entrepreneurial skills. That’s where I first read about  Sejal Makheja, 16, a sophomore who lives in McLean, Va. When she was 14, Sejal founded the Elevator Project, an organization that aims to lift people out of poverty through apprenticeship, vocational training … [Read more...]

What Improvisation Can Teach Social Change Leaders

April 8, 2015 by Beth Kanter

This post follows yesterday's post about networked leadership skills.   I had the honor of being a guest facilitator at a transformative leadership retreat with colleagues Heather McLeod Grant, Chris Block, Lance Fors, and David Havens - I got to teach but more importantly got to learn from amazing people.   The retreat curriculum is built around the a framework  called “I-WE-IT” that covers mindsets and practical skills that today’s social change leaders of all generations need as we move … [Read more...]

A Simple Way for Nonprofit Leaders To Incorporate Mindfulness Into Their Daily Work

April 7, 2015 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

Yesterday,  I had the honor of being a guest facilitator at a transformative leadership retreat with colleagues Heather McLeod Grant, Chris Block, Lance Fors, and David Havens.   The retreat curriculum is built around the a framework  called “I-WE-IT” that covers mindsets and practical skills that today’s social change leaders of all generations need as we move towards more collective approaches. I-WE-IT is a tripod of inter-connected skills for leaders:   the individual leader (I), the power of … [Read more...]
