If You Do Nothing Else, Use An Editorial Calendar and Measurement for Your Digital Strategy

December 10, 2013 by Beth Kanter

Note from Beth: Last week, I had the pleasure of facilitating two workshops on becoming a Networked Nonprofit:  Effective Social Strategy for nonprofits in Santa Barbara hosted by the Fund for Santa Barbara.   One of the fun exercises I facilitated  is a “Fishbowl” where a small group of  participants go through the process of generating ideas for an editorial calendar based on their key goals and audience definition. The best ever resource and template for an editorial calendar comes from my … [Read more...]

My Notes from Next Generation Evaluation Meeting

December 9, 2013 by Beth Kanter

Last month, FSG and Stanford Social Innovation Review hosted a meeting with nonprofit leaders, grantmakers, evaluators, and other interested organizations and individuals to explore the possibilities for learning and evaluation in the social sector called “Next Generation Evaluation.”    The conference was framed around the question: Given the convergence of networks and big data and the need for more innovation, what evaluation methods should be used to evaluate social change outcomes along … [Read more...]

Social Media and the Arts: How Strong Is Your Social Net?

December 6, 2013 by Beth Kanter

Note From Beth: Back in 2011, I had pleasure of facilitating a panel discussion Grantmakers in the Arts pre-conference on technology and media with Rory MacPherson  and Jai Sen from Sen Associates where I learned about research study they were conducting about social media use in the arts.   One of the study's authors, Mary Trudel, wrote a guest post back in 2011 summarizing the results.    They are in the process of updating the study and have some preliminary results to share. How Strong Is … [Read more...]

#GivingTuesday Lights Up Generosity (and Time Square)!

December 5, 2013 by Beth Kanter

On Tuesday,Dec.3rd,  the GivingTuesday logo was blazing in neon on Times Square.   The hashtag, #GivingTuesday, was trending on Twitter.    As some nonprofit insiders complained, #GivingTuesday is making too much noise.  And indeed it did: The #GivingTuesday hashtag was used 269,000 times in the 24 hour December 3 period, (as well as 406,000 times in the last 7 days, and 514,000 times in the last 30 days).  That’s an average of 11,208 tweets per hour, 186 times per minute. #GivingTuesday … [Read more...]

Happy #GivingTuesday! Help Me Support NTEN!

December 3, 2013 by Beth Kanter 2 Comments

Happy #GivingTuesday! It is the official start of  giving season and year-end campaigns.   For the past three years,  I've been a fundraising champion for NTEN, the premier organization for nonprofit techies. Let me tell you why: I started working in the field of nonprofit technology in 1992 before there was an organization like NTEN and working alone you quickly face the problem of too much to learn alone.      In the years leading up to the formation of NTEN, I was lucky enough to connect with … [Read more...]

NTEN offers nonprofit techies like me the opportunity to connect … [Read more...]

Why Does Bill Gates Have More LinkedIn Followers Than Conant O’Brien? Hint: #GivingTuesday

November 22, 2013 by Beth Kanter 1 Comment

Conan O’Brien announced on his show that wanted to climb to the top of the LinkedIn Influencer list.   He has a long way to go.     For example, Bill Gates has 7 times as many followers on LinkedIn than Conan.   Why?  Bill Gates is a philanthropist and is part of the GivingTuesday Movement. Conan poked fun at me because I have more LinkedIn followers than him. He joked that my red hat is the key to my success – it was a funny monologue, but I am offering Conan a better way to increase his … [Read more...]
