Emerging Leaders Need More than Leadership Development

March 27, 2017 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

Note from Beth:   Last year I was honored to partner with Kari Dunn Saratovksy from Third Plateau to facilitate an emerging leadership program to a cohort of leaders who were part of the Packard Foundation’s Science and Conservation portfolio of grantees. The project, which combined peer learning and mentoring together with an online “Emerging Leaders Playbook,” offered a new and entirely virtual approach to leadership development. We learned a lot from this project about how best support … [Read more...]

Book Review: Joan Garry's Guide to Nonprofit Leadership

February 23, 2017 by Beth Kanter 1 Comment

I'm a huge fan of Joan Garry's blog and podcast.    I consider the "Dear Abby" of the nonprofit world, dispensing practical and brilliant advice to nonprofits with her wonderful sense of humor.   Joan has been an executive director, board member, donor, and volunteer - so she brings to her consulting and educator practice so much perspective and wisdom.   She has packed all that into her new book, "Joan Garry's Guide to Nonprofit Leadership." I was honored to write a book blurb after reading an … [Read more...]

Every year Social CEOs hosts an annual award where they seek nominations for the top 30 … [Read more...]

Curiosity Kills Bad Work Habits

July 6, 2016 by Beth Kanter

The topic of habit change is something that Aliza Sherman and I researched and experimented with as we wrote "The Happy Healthy Nonprofit: Impact without Burnout" over the last year.  Habit change research was one of our favorite rabbit holes to explore. It lead us to discover the works of Gretchen Rubin, Charles Duhigg, BJ Fogg, and others.  As we wrote chapters on the book, we examined our own unhealthy habits and experimented applying some of the methods. This recent article on INC by Emily … [Read more...]
