A Free Agent and Nonprofits Working Together To End Homelessness
Christian Canter is the development director for Shelter Network, an agency that provides housing and services for homeless families and individuals. As part of my work as Visiting Scholar at the Packard Foundation, I've had an opportunity to work with him on social media strategy. So, when Mark Horvath, someone who fits the description of "free agent" in our book The Networked Nonprofit, let me know he was passing by San Francisco at the end of his road trip to promote WeAreVisible, I … [Read more...]
Surfrider Foundation: The Poster Child for a Networked Nonprofit
I grew up in a small beach town on the South Jersey Shore where I spent summers swimming and building sand castles. A deep appreciation for the ocean and beach is in my DNA. My father (photographed above) was a life guard, swimmer, and one of the first to take up surfing in the early 1960's on our beach. So, I always had a fondness for surfing. During my first week as Visiting Scholar at the Packard Foundation, I had an opportunity to hear a presentation by the good folks at Surfrider … [Read more...]
I'm betting $10 Social Media Wins …
My colleague, Clay Lord, Theatre Bay Area told me about a bet that the communications manager is having with the director of development. Here's the bet: THE BET: I must use the It’s Not the Size of the Gift platform to raise $1,937 by 5pm EST Friday, October 1st, and I can only promote it over social media networks. (Why $1,937, you ask? Well, that’s the exact number of Facebook fans we have at the very moment I am typing this call to action. In my brain I thought, wow, wouldn’t it be awesome … [Read more...]
The Networked Nonprofit Update
Allison Fine and I have been thrilled with the reception that our book, The Networked Nonprofit, has received. I'm very grateful for support and more so for the conversations and thoughtful blog posts you have shared. I wanted to share a few recent posts that I've enjoyed and a couple of upcoming book events. If You Want An Answer, Ask Everyone by Jane Wales, Huffington Post, provides an overview of crowdsourcing in philanthropy and quotes from the chapter in our book on … [Read more...]
Social Media for Good and Evil, Strong and Weak Ties, Online/Offline,and Orgs and Networks
Malcolm Gladwell's article "Small Change: Why the revolution will not be tweeted," brings the slacktivism, social media for social good or evil, strong and weak ties, and organizations vs networks debates to a mainstream audience. He tries to make the point: "Social change has been happening before the creation of Twitter four years ago" but disappoints. Anil Dash says it is wildly anachronistic to think that the only way to effect social change is to assemble a sign-wielding mob to … [Read more...]
The Dragonfly Effect: Win A Copy, Leave A Comment, Swab Your Cheek
On Sunday, I attended the book launch for the Dragonfly Effect, a book about quick, powerful ways to use social media for social change by Jennifer Aaker and Andy Smith. This book party was different, not because it had kids activities or the fun photo booth (see above), but because it also had a table from Be The Match to encourage people to sign up for the bone marrow registry. Let me explain how all these ideas tie together ... I met Jennifer Aaker about a year ago when she invited … [Read more...]
In Search of Bachelors and Philanthropy in Rural Alaska and Video Story Capture Tips
The Story Last week, my adventure in Alaska started with a meeting with representatives from community foundations around the state of Alaska hosted by the Alaska Community Foundation. That's where I met Joe Page from the Jessica Stevens Foundation who told me the amazing story about the Talkeetna Bachelor Society. The Talkeetna Bachelor Society is a program of the Denali Arts Council, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. The Society's fundraising activities benefit the Talkeetna Bachelor … [Read more...]
The Ladder of Love: Growing Facebook Fans
I was lucky enough to spend my last afternoon in Alaska driving to Talkeetna with Aliza Sherman who lives in Alaska who I've known since 1995 and with Cassandra Stalzer my host! I love the framework she created for identifying and cultivating Super Fans on Facebook. I like to call it the ladder of love! The very first step is getting attention and getting people to "like" or join your Facebook page. There are many creative ways to promote your Facebook page to promote your page to your … [Read more...]
