7 Social Media Toolsets for 2016 by @jeremycaplan
Jeremy Caplan is the Director of Education, Tow-Knight Center Entrepreneurial Journalism and an amazing teacher. I've never met him face-to-face, but I've learned some much from reading and using his curated instructional materials. He recently shared "Toolsets for Social Media," a brilliantly curated collection of tools. Before we dig into the content, let me point out why this so brilliant. A stellar example of content curation: Content curation is not aggregation or a big gigantic … [Read more...]
What I Learned In London at the Future of Social Conference
I am just back from spending a few days in London where I keynoted the "Future of Social" Conference hosted by Social Misfits Media with a talk about Gen Z or as they say in the UK, Gen Zed. I also facilitated several workshops for London-based nonprofit CEOs and communications directors on developing a strategy for their leadership profiles on social and internal champions (board, staff, and volunteers). The first half of the conference featured talks from three platforms that discussed … [Read more...]

Training Board Members As Social Media Ambassadors
Note from Beth: Last month, I facilitated a workshop for the Knight Digital Media Learning Seminar in Miami on "Leading on Social Media." It was an interactive workshop and the content was on how to leverage senior leaders, board, and staff as champions on social channels. Rachel Calderon, Marketing and Communications Manager, Central Florida Foundation was a workshop participant and after the workshop we brainstormed a design for training her board members to be champions. She agreed … [Read more...]

Methods and Metrics for Assessing Civic Tech
Note from Beth: My colleagues at Network Impact have released an important report about measuring and evaluating "civic tech" based on their experience working with Knight Foundation grantees. It goes beyond just analytics tools to exploring tools, techniques, and data for measuring deep civic engagement, open governance, and inclusive decision-making. My colleague, Anne Whatley, wrote this summary of what you'll find when you dig into these two stellar and highly practical reports and … [Read more...]
The Art of Facilitating Virtual Meetings with Sticky Notes
Last week, Andrea Kihlstedt and I did a reprise of our Guidestar webinar, "Healthy and Productive Meetings" as a learning session for Guidestar staff. Guidestar has multiple office locations, so this session was done as a virtual meeting using a platform and apps that offered features like chat, desktop sharing, polling, white board, sticky notes, and audio and video conferencing. As trainers, Andrea and I both know the value of "modeling the model," so we wanted to use and model best … [Read more...]
