My Most Engaged Follower On Twitter Is @JenniferPreston

May 21, 2015 by Beth Kanter

My most engaged follower on Twitter this past week is Jennifer Preston.  I know why Jennifer, who is the VP at the Knight Foundation is one of my engaged followers this week.   Earlier this week I was in Miami to do a social media pre-workshop at the Knight Digital Media Seminar.  Jennifer was observing and tweeting during the session.  (If you want to read the re-caps or view the videos for the seminar itself, the Knight Foundation blog has full documentation here). On the other hand,  my most … [Read more...]

What I Learned From @Sree Sreenivasan Chief Digital Officer of @MetMuseum

May 20, 2015 by Beth Kanter 4 Comments

I just spent two days in Miami at the Knight Foundation Media Learning Seminar where I co-facilitate a pre-conference workshop on leading on social channels with Amy Gahran and Stephanie Rudat.   But I also got an opportunity to finally hear the keynote speaker, Sree Sreenivasan, Chief Digital Officer of the @MetMuseum in person.   I've been fan for a long time, but never had the chance to meet or hear him in person. Sree is authentic, humble, and always making connections.   When I asked for a … [Read more...]

Why Good Habit Formation Is Important for Nonprofits

May 19, 2015 by Beth Kanter

For the past few months, I’ve been working on a new project that will launch next month.   It is a leadership professional development project for emerging leaders in nonprofits in collaboration with Third Plateau funded by the Packard Foundation. This pilot project will test a leadership development training model for emerging leaders in environmental organizations that uses a combination of peer learning, coaching, and mentoring. The approach tests a hypothesis that emerging leaders need to … [Read more...]

Take A Walk! Work Smarter and Live Longer

We know that sitting is bad for your health and has been dubbed "the new smoking."    Two years ago I got put on a fitbit and started walking, and haven't stopped.  It's benefited overall physical health and boosts cognitive function. I've been incorporating sitting, standing, and walking into my work and doing sessions at nonprofit conferences about walking as work.    After a session at the NTEN Nonprofit Technology Conference,  Lisa Colton, set up the "Take A Walk" group on Facebook for … [Read more...]

Great conference @meansandrew and see at next years #DoGoodData2015 may the force be with us all @kanter pic.twitter.com/7pXQWjyyXH — Alicia Schatteman (@aschatteman) May 1, 2015 Last week I attended the DoGoodData Conference in Chicago where I learned an incredible amount about the human side of data - themes like data visualization, data informed culture, using data for impact, and more. I also was honored to facilitate a reflection exercise as part of the closing plenary session with data … [Read more...]

[slideshare id=47477919&doc=slideshare-150427143443-conversion-gate02] Today I presented on a "featured session" at the United Way Community Leaders Conference in Grapevine, Texas.  The conference theme was "Working Together in the Era of the Individual."   I facilitated an interactive featured session on why and how leaders should be engaged on social as well as other insiders (employees, board, and volunteers). This post goes into more detail and provides some resources on planning and … [Read more...]

PLEASE MAKE A RECURRING GIFT:   I've donated to the GlobalGiving Earthquake Fund - the money will go to a vetted network of NGOS - and they have a donor who is matching all recurring gifts.  Even if you made a donation, consider making a recurring gift which will be matched and assure that funding will be there when most needed.   You can donate here.   I also donated to Save the Children and if you are an Orbitz customer they are matching donations. According to the Guardian, the 7.8-magnitude … [Read more...]
