Happy New Year: What's Your Theme for the Year?

January 2, 2015 by Beth Kanter

This year I took off a full two weeks during the holiday, spending time with family on the Big Island on a coffee farm and mostly offline.   I didn't do a complete unplug, as we're so dependent on the Internet for information in navigate our daily lives, which is a huge change since I first got online in 1993.    And, now with those beautiful sunsets behind me, I look ahead to 2015. I have a couple of New Year’s rituals that help prepare me for a new year.  These include a review of the year’s … [Read more...]

The ALS Ice Bucket Donor Retention Challenge

December 11, 2014 by Beth Kanter

Last month,  I had the pleasure of attending the Social Innovation Summit,  a twice annual event that represents a global convening of thought leaders in technology, investment, philanthropy, international development, and business.   I've been going every year since 2009 to cover the event on my blog.    Out of all the amazing speakers and discussions,  I was lucky enough to sit down with Barb Newhouse, President & Chief Executive Officer ALS Association and discuss the Ice Bucket … [Read more...]

What Social Media Analytics Can't Tell You About Your Audience

December 9, 2014 by Beth Kanter

My colleague, Alexandra Samuel,  has published a report over at Vision Critical based on integrating survey data with consumers actual social media usage versus self-reporting.    So, in other words, research respondents opt-in to integrating their answers with their social media profiles.   The methodology and report provide some great insights about how to think about social media behaviors of our audience.   While the study looks at the details of consumer behavior, motivations, AND their … [Read more...]

[slideshare id=34307267&doc=digitalstorytellingforsocialimpact-140505155807-phpapp01] Note from Beth:  Over the past six months,  I've been on an advisory group for project that my colleague Jay Geneske at the Rockefeller Foundation has spearheaded to help build the capacity of nonprofits in storytelling skills. The Foundation recognized that a big opportunity exists between the intersection of story and technology, and  launched a research project to consider the role that digital … [Read more...]

Thank You Wednesday: The Gift of Giving Tuesday

December 3, 2014 by Beth Kanter 6 Comments

It is early here in Sao Paulo, Brasil, but I wanted to capture some quick reflections about the experience of GivingTuesday. Maybe it is because I am in a different country, but I felt the magic of what Giving Tuesday was intended to be when it launched two years ago. Yesterday, Giving Tuesday showed the abundance and generativeness that working in networks, movements, and community or whatever you want to call them can produce. Giving Tuesday is more than a gigantic Kickstarter campaign for … [Read more...]

December 1, 2014 by Beth Kanter

I'm in Sao Paulo, Brasil to speak at Telefonica's Conference on virtual volunteering that takes place on December 2nd (GivingTuesday).  I'll be talking about how individuals and NGOS can have a great impact by building relationships online and inspiring their networks to take action - whether volunteering, giving money,or  educating others. I've been a champion for GivingTuesday , a global day of giving to kick off the giving season, since the beginning because the idea of encouraging everyone … [Read more...]

#thankful4home: Raising Awareness Around Homelessness

November 25, 2014 by Beth Kanter

#thankful4home: A Lesson in Project Based Learning & Gratitude guest post by Lisa Colton This fall and winter I’m working with a group of organizations in Chicago to raise awareness around homelessness, alongside screenings of the @Home documentary that features portraits of this issue through the eyes of activist Mark Horvath.  Through an impact-producing grant from the Polk Bros Foundation, we’re helping these local organizations raise awareness of their work and mature their online … [Read more...]

Record-breaking donations on Give to the Max Day in Minnesota

November 24, 2014 by Beth Kanter

GiveMN launched its "Give to the Max Day" over 6 years ago.  It was one of the first 24-hour day of giving that rallies and inspires to donate to charities.  On November 13, Minnesotans broke a record Thursday, donating more than $18 million to schools and non-profits.  I have been tracking this giving day since its first Giving Day back in 2009 and every year do a debrief post or interview.  This year, I was lucky enough to get Dana Nelson, Executive Director to do an email interview.    GiveMN … [Read more...]
