January 9, 2023 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

The Chronicle of Philanthropy recently published an opinion piece, “AI Can Help Nonprofits Reach More Donors But Fundraisers Can’t Ignore Potential Pitfalls,” a topic that Allison Fine and I have been researching and writing about since 2017.   In 2019, we did a deep dive on AI & Giving to look at the landscape of fundraising tools & platforms using AI and the implications. Our next project was the research and writing of the “The Smart Nonprofit: Staying Human-Centered in an Age … [Read more...]

March 9, 2022 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

Several years ago, Allison Fine and I started talking about our next book together and started writing and thinking about the implications of an emerging technology that we describe as “Smart Tech,” and what nonprofit leaders need to know to be prepared. Today is the day that a lot of writing, thinking, and speaking about this topic comes full circle.   Today, my new book,The Smart Nonprofit: Staying Human-Centered in an Automated World, co-authored with Allison Fine, … [Read more...]

I’ve got some very exciting news, my new book,The Smart Nonprofit: Staying Human-Centered in an Automated World, co-authored with Allison Fine, launches on Wednesday, March 9th. The Smart Nonprofit is a jargon-free roadmap for nonprofit staff, boards, volunteers, and funders on the ways “smart technologies” like artificial intelligence are changing social change work. Using smart tech to reimagine nonprofit work

February 14, 2022 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

AI and other smart tech can make work culture more human, but only if you know how the tech works and focus on using it to do what it does best (answer rote questions online) and allow people to do what we do best (e.g. strengthen relationships, tell stories, empathize with others.) Here is an article on the Candid blog that I wrote with the brilliant Allison Fine on how to use smart tech to create more work-life balance for all. The article shares a few themes from our forthcoming book, … [Read more...]

Five New Year’s Rituals for Nonprofit Professionals

January 5, 2022 by Beth Kanter Leave a Comment

Rituals are intentional small, tangible acts done routinely and carry meaning.  Our family has several New Year's rituals, including a nature hike.  This year we hiked by the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur. (Pictured above) Rituals can also be used by professionals to boost personal productivity because rituals capitalize on our brains’ ability to direct our behavior on autopilot, allowing us to reach our goals even when we are distracted or preoccupied with other things. (In fact, … [Read more...]
